Fuel cell for tidal, wind energy storage:
"During strong wind or wave conditions a percentage of power could be siphoned off to the hydrogen plant. The new system, which relies on a super-efficient electrolyte, would then be used to create the gas, which would be stored and used to produce electricity during natural lulls. 'Present methods of creating electricity using hydrogen from electrolysis are around 30 per cent efficient owing to the amount of power that must be used,' said Prof John Irvine of the university's Centre for Advanced Materials. 'We are trying to increase this figure to 50 per cent by using an ionic conducting micro-electrolyte. The thinner the electrolyte the more current goes through it and the lower the amount of energy lost from resistance. This makes the system more efficient.' The method is currently being patented, but Irvine says that the electrolyte is ceramic based and works at a temperature of around 400 degrees C. This is higher than the operating temperature of conventional polymer membranes and lower than that of a solid oxide system." 1:24:16 PM
UN, banks offer cut-rate loans for solar power development in India: "The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) today launched a major new $7.6 million initiative with two of India's largest banking groups to offer 18,000 southern Indian households low-cost financing for clean and reliable electricity from solar power. .. In the southern Indian state of Karnataka, Syndicate Bank and Canara Bank are offering the new loans in which UNEP is "buying down" financing costs of photovoltaic solar home systems. Indian households will effectively be able to purchase systems at an interest rate of approximately 5 per cent, compared to the normal consumer lending rates of 11 to 12 per cent. The programme is made possible with support from the UN Foundation (UNF) and Shell Foundation. By combining two banks and a number of UNEP-qualified solar home system vendors, UNF President Tim Wirth said the programme is a "market-driven approach designed to stimulate competition among vendors and ensure quality products, competitive pricing and reliable after-sales service."" 1:17:38 PM
World PV market up 26% in 2002, US market up 60%
: "The combined impact of major solar energy incentive programs in Japan, Germany and the United States helped produce a record world market for solar photovoltaic (PV) installations of 436 Megawatts (MW) in 2002. This is an increase of 26% over 2001. Strong growth in the US was partially offset by slower growth in the key European market of Germany, while Japan continued its dominance as the largest PV market in the world. As investment in new manufacturing capacity for solar photovoltaic cells through 2002 and 2003 remains ahead of the pace of market growth, the solar PV industry is projected to continue its long run trend of price decline in 2003. Worldwide PV cell shipments rose by 36% to 530 MW, as Japanese manufacturers set the pace on expansion of solar cell manufacturing capacity. " 1:14:20 PM
