A survey of open-source programmers shows most to be professionals rather than students, mostly 22-37 years old with average 11 years programming experience. Survey respondents were attracted by it as a professional outlet, citing intellectual stimulation, skill improvement, creative possibilities and freedom from traditional corporate supervision. About 20% also cited practical needs for code which isn't commercially available. 9:18:06 AM
