China and Philippines have started open source development companies.  The Beijing Co-Create Open Source Software Company was founded in April 2001 after endorsement from government bodies.  It emphasizes embedded Linux, with office file viewers and GUI tools.  The Philippine Distributed Development Network (DDN) was launched in February 2002.  It distributes, develops, and supports open source products.  9:29:01 AM  permalink  

A survey of open-source programmers shows most to be professionals rather than students, mostly 22-37 years old with average 11 years programming experience. Survey respondents were attracted by it as a professional outlet, citing intellectual stimulation, skill improvement, creative possibilities and freedom from traditional corporate supervision.  About 20% also cited practical needs for code which isn't commercially available.
